How should marble tabletops be maintained?

Marble can be divided into engineered marble and natural marble, which are often chosen for the interior design and furniture of luxury hotels, such as dining tables, bar counters, and vanities, infusing the entire hotel environment with an artistic atmosphere and a sense of high-end quality.

Natural marble is prized for its unique veining and colors, but its porous structure makes it stainprone and in need of regular sealing and cleaning to preserve its finish.

Engineered marble, made from natural stone aggregates and resin binders, is more stain and scratchresistant and offers greater design flexibility—though it still benefits from routine care.

Daily Maintenance:

(1) Dust and clean the marble regularly:

Natural marble is not resistant to acidic or alkaline liquids. During daily cleaning, never use acidic or alkaline cleaners—such as soap or baking soda—as they can damage the marble’s structure. Instead, use a neutral cleaner (such as dish soap or hand soap), wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry and polish with a soft, dry cloth to restore its luster.

(2) Regular Polishing and Sealing:

Regular polishing and sealing of marble is key to maintaining its smoothness and durability. This process removes minor scratches and imperfections from the surface, restoring the marble to a like-new condition. You may choose professional marble polishing agents and sealants and follow the instructions, or hire a professional to perform the polishing and sealing.

(3) Avoid Water-Based or Solid Waxes:

Applying water-based or solid waxes is a traditional, outdated maintenance method from over a decade ago. This approach clogs the stone’s natural pores, preventing it from “breathing” properly, which can lead to discoloration and other issues—it has serious drawbacks. Depending on usage frequency, we recommend periodic crystallization and hardening treatments.

Notes:

(1) Marble is a relatively fragile material, so when using marble furniture, never strike it with hard or heavy objects.

(2) Do not place extremely hot utensils on marble countertops; keep temperatures below 70°C and limit contact time to no more than 30 minutes.

(3) If water accumulates on the marble countertop—especially dark-colored liquids—it is best to wipe it clean within 30 minutes. Since the stone absorbs some moisture, failure to dry it thoroughly in a timely manner can lead to issues such as efflorescence, mold, black spots, and bubbling.
