Fire Rated Doors for Hotels: Wood vs Steel vs Composite – Kyatt Expert Guide

Fire Rated Doors for Hotels.jpg

Fire door is a door that meets requirements for fire resistance, integrity, and thermal insulation for a specified period of time. In addition to serving the same purpose as ordinary doors, fire doors also prevent the spread of fire and smoke, thereby buying time for people to escape during a fire.

Classification of Fire Doors

Classification of Fire Doors.jpg

1. By material, fire doors can be classified as: wooden fire doors, steel fire doors, steel-wood composite fire doors, and fire doors made of other materials.

2. By fire resistance performance, they can be classified as: heat-insulated fire doors (Class A), partially heat-insulated fire doors (Class B), and non-heat-insulated fire doors (Class C). Additionally, the fire resistance ratings for Class A, Class B, and Class C fire doors are 1.5 hours, 1.0 hours, and 0.5 hours, respectively (fire resistance ratings are determined by a combination of thermal insulation and integrity).

Among hotel furnishings, wooden fire-rated doors are the most widely used, followed by steel fire-rated doors and steel-wood composite fire-rated doors.

1. Wooden Fire-Rated Doors (MFM)

Made from flame-retardant-treated wood, these are suitable for locations with high decorative requirements, such as hotels and residential buildings.

2. Steel Fire Doors (GFM)

The door frame, skeleton, and panels are all made of steel, filled with non-toxic fire-resistant materials (such as perlite boards), and are widely used in industrial and public buildings.

3. Steel-Wood Fire Doors (GMFM)

Combining a steel skeleton with wooden panels, these doors balance strength and aesthetics.

Core Components

1. Door Leaf

o Panel: Fire-retardant wood or steel (≥0.8 mm),

o Filling Material: Perlite fire-resistant board (non-toxic, good thermal insulation; gradually replacing rock wool);

2. Door Frame: Support structure; wooden frames must undergo fire-retardant treatment, while steel door frames must be ≥1.2 mm thick;

3. Fire-resistant gaskets;

4. Specialized hardware: Fire-rated hinges, fire-rated locks, door closers (standard for normally closed doors), sequence devices (required for double-leaf doors), etc.
